Define and compare
Describe the object, terrain, interference, water, time available and your experience. Check access rules at the location before planning a search. Compare the technique first, then devices that solve the same problem. A price or claimed range is useful only when the test conditions and the target are known.
Demonstrate and document
Ask how a demonstration was set up: known targets, ground, settings, coil and repeated trials. Record uncertain signals as well as clear ones. Request a written list of the exact model, accessories, software, training, warranty and delivery. Keep that list with the offer so a later change in version or kit can be spotted.
When to stop comparing
A comparison has reached its limit when the outcome depends on ground conditions you have not measured or on accessories that the quote does not list. At that point, ask for a demonstration or a written clarification instead of adding another general model to the shortlist. Note the test location, target and settings when reviewing examples. If the task is a ground survey or a safety-relevant decision, obtain suitable professional advice as well as equipment information.
